How many people does an infected person infect before they are well? 31 people in 16 days;
with intervention, 5 people in 16 days. The flu can be passed 24 hours before any symtoms appear. Incubation period is 1-7 days.
What can you do to help prevent the spread of Swine Flu?
- Wash your hands often with soap and warm water. How long to wash? Sing “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star” through completely – both verses. Use an alcohol gel hand sanitizer if soap and water are not available.
- See your physician early as there are some medications that can help if taken in the first couple of days.
- STAY HOME if you are sick- that means work, church, etc.
- Socially distance yourself. What does that mean? STAY AWAY FROM PEOPLE if you are sick. ; don’t get closer than 6 feet to an infected person. How do you do that? Don’t go to work, church, movies—you got it, any type of social gathering.
- Disenfect hard dry surfaces. Germs can last a week on these surfaces.
- Use etiquette-cover your mouth when coughing instead of into your hand. This is not your mother’s etiquette. Cough into your upper arm. You know, like mother told you not to do when you were little. Hands carry germs.
What are the symtoms of Swine Flu?
Fever: over 100.5° F; 38.5° C.
Cough
Sore throat
Headache
Body aches
How can you help to keep from catching Swine Flu?
- Get plenty of rest – 8 hours of sleep
- Maintain a healthy diet
- Try to avoid stress
- Get vaccinated when vaccine is available (August or September)
For local information on Swine Flu, visit: http://www.brhd.org/
Call 211 for answers in English and Spanish.
